PAID STAFF POSITIONS FOR 2008

The following positions are available at the George Pringle Memorial Camp for the 2008 summer camping season. All camp positions require energetic, enthusiastic, skillful leaders who are willing to contribute to the overall camp program and be part of a dedicated, collaborative staff team.

Camp Pringle is a United Church residential camp for children, youth and families, located on the western shores of Shawnigan Lake, a 45-minute drive north of Victoria. Our program and staff aim to model Christian values of care, acceptance, challenge, respect for diversity, and community. Our outdoor experience offers canoeing, sailing, swimming, windsurfing, archery, crafts, nature study, skits, music, faith exploration, games, and out trips as part of our program.

 


Program Coordinator

Application Deadline: January 31, 2008

Skills Required:
Excellent supervisory, organizational, interpersonal and programming skills
Understanding of children and youth and their developmental needs in recreation
Experience in designing programs for and working with children and youth
Experience in camp skills (campfire, music, drama, games, archery, out trips, nature study, etc.)

Job Responsibilities and Duties Include:
Develop resources, plan and coordinate activities, and directly lead programs and activities for campers
Coordinate and delegate responsibilities for whole camp activities and special events
Assist in facilitation of staff and volunteer training events related to programming
Assess evaluations of programs; prepare reports and summaries of evaluation information
Supervise camp staff and all program activities

Term of Employment and Wages:
11-18 weeks at up to $484/week (starting either late April or early June). Most of work period involves staying overnight at camp 5 nights a week (Sunday evening until late Friday afternoon). Room & board included. Up to first 6 weeks of full 18 week term involves camp programs for area schools.


Crew/CIT Leaders (2 positions available)

Application Deadline: January 31, 2008

The successful applicants will be effective, energetic planners who are excellent team players, have the ability to work independently, and enjoy working with youth. Two Crew/CIT Leaders will work as a team (along with the Crew Project Leader) to organize, plan and implement a Crew and a Counselor-in-Training program that combines work experience, leadership training and recreation for youth ages 15-16 (Crew) and 16+ (CIT). Applicants should have supervisory, programming and extensive camp experience, excellent communication, and skills in youth leadership. Experience leading in Christian settings, first aid certification, property maintenance skills and experience in leading out trips are definite assets.

Term of Employment and Wages:
June 14 - August 22. $784 for June 14 to June 27 (preparatory and staff training weeks). June 23 to August 22 requires residing overnight at Camp Pringle 5 nights per week (Sunday evening until late Friday afternoon) @ approx. $444 per week plus room & board. Possibility of additional employment opportunities with camp school programs starting in May.

 


Crew Project Leader (1 positions available)

Application Deadline: February 15, 2008

The successful applicant will be an effective, energetic planner who is an excellent team player, has the ability to work independently, and enjoys working with youth. The Crew Project Leader will work with the camp’s Crew Leaders as a team to organize, plan and implement a Crew program that combines work experience, leadership training and recreation for youth ages 15-16.

Applicants should have supervisory, programming and youth leadership experience. Good property and buildings maintenance skills also important. Experience leading in Christian settings, first aid certification and experience in leading out trips are definite assets. Special responsibilities include supervising Crew work projects and assisting the Property Manager in general camp maintenance. The ideal candidate will require strong people, supervisory and practical maintenance skills.

Term of Employment and Wages: June 14 – August 22, 2008. $404/week plus room & board for 5 nights/week (9 weeks). (Sunday evening until late Friday afternoon).

Chaplain

Application Deadline: January 31, 2008

Skills Required:
Excellent communication, interpersonal and programming skills and United Church philosophy
Understanding of children and youth and their developmental needs
Strong experience in designing and leading Christian programs and working with children and youth

Job Responsibilities and Duties Include:
Plan, organize and run the spiritual component of the summer program
Provide spiritual guidance and leadership to camp staff
Ensure campers are exposed to a positive, Christian experience at the camp
Work closely with the Executive Director and Program Coordinator in the programming of the summer

Term of Employment and Wages:
12-18 weeks at up to $484/week (starting mid-May). Most of work period involves staying overnight at camp 5 nights a week (Sunday evening until late Friday afternoon). Room & board included. Up to first 6 weeks of full 18 week term involves camp programs for area schools.


Waterfront Director (1 position available) Application Deadline: January 31, 2008

The successful applicant will be an effective planner with leadership skills, a good team member, and someone who enjoys working with children and youth. Requires NLS and Boat Safety certificates prior to job start. Supervisory experience and First Aid certificate preferred.

Responsibilities include:
Planning and implementing programs featuring swimming, canoeing, sailing, and windsurfing;
Overseeing waterfront safety;
Supervising and providing appropriate training to 2 or more other lifeguards;
Ensuring boats and other equipment is kept in good order and that the waterfront area is maintained in tidy condition;
Leading group hikes and out trips; participation and leadership in all general camp activities

Terms of employment and wages:
Approximately $4500/summer (including 4% holiday pay, 20 hrs for pre-summer preparation, and full-time June 14-15 and June 23- August 22). Work period June 23 – August 22 involves staying at camp 5 nights a week (Sunday evening until late Friday afternoon), with room and board included.

Lifeguards/Waterfront Staff (2 positions available) Application Deadline: February 15, 2008

The applicant must have completed grade 12 and hold both NLS and Boat Safety certificates prior to job start. S/he should also be able to teach at least two of the following: swimming, sailing, canoeing or windsurfing. Out trip experience an asset. Duties include assisting in waterfront and general camp duties as outlined above in Waterfront Director's position.

Terms of employment and wages: Approx. $3525/summer plus room & board for 5 nights/week. (9 weeks), June 25 - August 24. (Sunday evening until late Friday afternoon).

Substitute Lifeguard Paid Position
(1 position available)

Application Deadline: February 15, 2008

Identical to the Lifeguard Staff above, however this position is hired for our family oriented camps from July 30th – August 7, 2008 only. The Substitute Lifeguard will also be expected to attend the full summer training June 14 & 15, June 23 – 27 and will be paid 7.5 hrs/day at $8/hour for this training. For the period of July 30 – Aug. 7th the Substitute Lifeguard will be paid $8/hour for 6, 8-hour days plus receive free room and board for all time at camp.


 

Cabin Leaders (7 positions available)

The successful applicants will be enthusiastic, energetic team players who enjoy working with children and youth. Applicants must be 18 years of age or older and have previous leadership experience. Duties include care, supervision, organization and leadership of camp activities for a cabin group of 10 children or youth per week. Experience in youth leadership in Christian settings an asset.

Term of Employment and Wages:
June 14-August 22, 2008, with possibility of additional employment opportunities starting in May. (Ask for details). Approx. $384 per week plus room & board for 5 nights/week (9 weeks). Sunday evening until late Friday afternoon.


 

Assistant Cooks (2 positions available)

Application Deadline: February 15, 2008

The successful candidates will be mature, responsible workers who enjoy working in a busy camp environment. Duties include helping Head Chef with meal planning and preparation, and assuming other duties as assigned by Head Chef or Program Coordinator. Must have Food Safe or equivalent.

Terms of Employment and Wages: June 14 - August 22 @ approx. $312.00 per week plus room & board for 5 nights/week. (9 weeks). (Sunday evening until late Friday afternoon).

Photographer

Application Deadline: March 15, 2008

The successful applicant will be someone with the ability to capture excellent, representative photographs of children participating in various camp activities. They must be sensitive to the nature of camp photography and privacy. The Photographer will be provided with a digital camera and iMac computer and will be expected to upload daily photographs to a camp website. They will also be expected to produce DVDs for sale at the camp. A successful candidate will also have the capability of taking and producing video each week and including this on the weekly DVD as well as producing promotional and a staff videos. Evidence of photography and video editing courses successfully completed will be an asset.

Terms of employment and wages: The pay is $8/hour based on a 40 hour work week during the summer and 7 days of training at 7.5 hours per day. The Photographer will also be compensated for Sunday training nights. Work period June 23 – August 22 involves staying at camp 5 nights a week (Sunday evening until late Friday afternoon), with room and board included.

Music/Craft Coordinator

Application Deadline: March 15, 2008

The applicant must have successfully completed some courses in music and art. They must be able to determine appropriate additions to our musical program and understand reasonable censorship of modern songs to ensure an appropriate selection during dances. They will also work closely with our weekly volunteer Craft Leaders to ensure that the craft program matches the weekly theme. A solid base in the United Church would be appropriate for this position.

Terms of employment and wages: The pay is $8/hour based on a 40 hour work week during the summer and 7 days of training at 7.5 hours per day. The Photographer will also be compensated for Sunday training nights. Work period June 23 – August 22 involves staying at camp 5 nights a week (Sunday evening until late Friday afternoon), with room and board included.

SPRING BREAK VOLUNTEER JOBS FOR 2008

 

Cabin Leader (12 positions available)

Application Deadline: February 15, 2008

The successful applicants will be enthusiastic, energetic team players who enjoy working with children and youth. Applicants must be at least 15 years of age. Duties include care, supervision, organization and leadership of camp activities for a cabin group of up to 10 children age 8-12. Experience in youth leadership in Christian settings an asset. Volunteering during the spring will be given weight when you apply to Co-Lead in the summer.

Term of Employment: March 10 -13, 2008. Volunteers will be required to attend training from Sunday, March 10 at 2:00pm. Meals and accommodations will be provided at no cost and a letter of recognition with your hours worked will be mailed to you soon after the completion of the camp.


 

Adult Support Staff (8 positions available)

Application Deadline: February 15, 2008

Job Description and Skills Required:
The successful applicants will be effective, energetic team players, who enjoy working with children and youth. The adult leaders will serve as mentors and support for the Cabin Leaders and will help the leaders understand and implement proper discipline with the campers. Those with special talents like nursing or crafts should indicate that on their application form.

Term of Employment:
March 10-13, 2008. Adult volunteers are expected to attend the training session starting Sunday, March 11 at 2:00pm up at the camp.


 

VOLUNTEER STAFF POSITIONS FOR 2008

 

Shadow Guards (19 positions available)

Application Deadline: February 15, 2008

The successful applicants will be enthusiastic, energetic team players who enjoy working with children and youth. Applicants must be at least 16 years of age. The applicant must have completed grade 12 and hold an NLS certificate prior to job start. S/he should also be able to assist in the teaching of at least two of the following: swimming, sailing, canoeing or windsurfing. Out trip experience an asset. Duties include assisting in waterfront and general camp duties.


 

Cabin Co-Leaders (19 positions available)

Application Deadline: February 15, 2008

The successful applicants will be enthusiastic, energetic team players who enjoy working with children and youth. Applicants must be at least 16 years of age. The applicant must have be at least 16 and have some experience working with children. Babysitting courses and prior Crew experience at a camp are assets.

Term of Employment: Volunteers will be required to attend training sessions starting at 7:00pm on the Sunday before each camp and stay on-site from Sunday evening until Friday afternoon at about 5pm, (unless otherwise indicated in your confirmation package for a particular camp). You will also be expected to attend one day of the staff training weekend, June 14 & 15. Meals and accommodations will be provided at no cost and a letter of recognition with your hours worked will be mailed to you soon after the completion of the camp.


 

Craft Leaders (9 positions available)

Application Deadline: March 15, 2008

The successful applicants will be enthusiastic, energetic team players who enjoy working with children and youth. Craft Leaders should be over 25 years of age. Applicants must be excited about craft activities and be prepared to organize a craft based on the theme for the week. The craft will be made by about 100 campers and leaders and must be appropriate for the ages and genders attending for the week. Craft leaders, in addition to organizing crafts during the rotation periods, are also expected to be prepared to assist campers with various craft activities as requested by Cabin Leaders at appropriate times during the camp. They are also asked to provide assistance with other camp activities when possible. Successful applicants are asked to attend a special adult leader session during the volunteer training weekend on Saturday, June 14.


 

Camp Parents (16 positions available)

Application Deadline: March 15, 2008

The successful applicants will be enthusiastic, energetic team players who enjoy working with children and youth. Applicants should be at least 25 years of age. The applicant will be expected to organize the dining room for all meals, distribute drinks and snacks at appropriate times and assist with camp activities, camper discipline and homesickness as required. Successful applicants are asked to attend a special adult leader session during the volunteer training weekend on Saturday, June 14.



Camp Nurse/First Aid Attendants (16 positions available)

Application Deadline: March 15, 2008

Job Description and Skills Required:
The successful applicant will be a qualified RN, GP, or Paramedic, experienced in first aid for children. You will be responsible for collecting and distributing medications to campers, treating all ailments and injuries including insect bites, food allergies, homesickness and bruised egos. Successful applicants are asked to attend a special adult leader session during the volunteer training weekend on Saturday, June 14.

Term of Employment:
Volunteers will be required to attend training sessions starting at 7:00pm on the Sunday before each camp and stay on-site from Sunday evening until Friday afternoon at about 5pm, (unless otherwise indicated in your confirmation package for a particular camp). You will also be invited to attend the volunteer training weekend, June 14. Meals and accommodations will be provided at no cost. Volunteers will be permitted to bring one child, staying with them, at no extra charge. Additional children will be charged $50 each for their week at camp. Children staying in a cabin and participating in the program will be required to pay the full registration fee. Bursaries are available.

 


 

Volunteer Chaplains (9 positions available)

Application Deadline: March 15, 2007

The successful applicants will be enthusiastic, energetic team players who enjoy working with children and youth. Successful applicants will be Ordained Ministers in the United Church of Canada. Volunteer Chaplains will serve as mentors to the Summer Chaplain and will help guide the faith orientation of the week through the Summer Chaplain. The Summer Chaplain will program and develop the faith experience at camp with input and guidance from the Volunteer Chaplain. Successful applicants are asked to attend a special adult leader session during the volunteer training weekend on Saturday, June 16.

Term of Employment:
Volunteers will be required to attend training sessions starting at 7:00pm on the Sunday before each camp and stay on-site from Sunday evening until Friday afternoon at about 5pm, (unless otherwise indicated in your confirmation package for a particular camp). Meals and accommodations will be provided at no cost. Volunteers will be permitted to bring one child, staying with them, at no extra charge. Additional children will be charged $50 each for their week at camp. Children staying in a cabin and participating in the program will be required to pay the full registration fee. Office Assistants (9 positions available)

The successful applicants will be enthusiastic, energetic team players who enjoy working with children and youth. Office assistants will help the Registrar with organizing paperwork, delivering messages and in any way that helps the Registrar and the office function smoothly. Successful applicants will be required to sign a confidentiality paper. Successful applicants are asked to attend a special adult leader session during the volunteer training weekend on Saturday, June 16.

Term of Employment:
Volunteers will be required to attend training sessions starting at 7:00pm on the Sunday before each camp and stay on-site from Sunday evening until Friday afternoon at about 5pm, (unless otherwise indicated in your confirmation package for a particular camp). Meals and accommodations will be provided at no cost. Volunteers will be permitted to bring one child, staying with them, at no extra charge. General Helpers (6 positions available)

Application Deadline: March 15, 2008

The successful applicants will be enthusiastic, energetic team players who enjoy working with children and youth. General Helpers will assist as a leader during the activity rotations and accept all the responsibilities that go with that roll. General Helpers will also assist in areas of camp as directed by the Program Coordinator or the Executive Director. General Helpers must be 16 years of age or older for an intermediate age camp, or 15 years of age or older for a junior age camp. Usually, a General Helper wants to be a Co-Leader or Cabin Leader in the future and needs more experience to achieve this goal.


 

Bike Co-Leader (2 positions available)

Application Deadline: March 15, 2008

The successful applicants will be enthusiastic, energetic team players who enjoy working with children and youth. Applicants must be female, at least 17 years of age, own a mountain bike and be prepared to ride 6 hours per day. The successful applicant will assist the trip leader and the chaplain with the supervision of campers, primarily the female campers on the trip. She will likely sleep in a tent with the female campers. Knowledge of camp songs, stories and skits would be an asset. The successful candidate would be expected to meet with the trip leader and the chaplain before the camp as required by the trip leader and would be welcome at the volunteer training weekend on June 14. Meals and accommodation will be provided as well as bike tune-ups as required.


 

Babysitters/Dishwashers (6 positions available)

Application Deadline: March 15, 2008

The successful applicant will be an experienced babysitter prepared to supervise up to 10 children with the assistance of at least one other babysitter during the Family, and/or Parent & Child Camps. These babysitters will also be required to clean and put away the dishes for all meals during the Family Camp. They will also be expected to help with other activities when not babysitting as required by the Program Coordinator or Executive Director. The babysitter at any other camps will be solely responsible for babysitting up to three children for a camp volunteer. Successful applicants will be expected to attend the training weekend on June 14.

Term of Employment: Volunteers will be required to attend training sessions starting at 7:00pm on the Sunday before each camp and stay on-site from Sunday evening until Friday afternoon at about 5pm, (unless otherwise indicated in your confirmation package for a particular camp). SUMMER 2008 STAFF BIOS

Camp Pringle welcomes our new Registrar, Lesley Gunning. Leslie has been involved in camping for many years and has worked as a leader for the past 4 summers at a forestry education camp. She has a background in the United Church and was a co-founder of the Greater Victoria Ringette Association. We look forward to having Leslie on our summer team in 2008.

Darryl MacLeod - Executive Director
Darryl has lived in Ottawa, Kelowna, Tabuk, Riyadh, Thetis Island and Victoria. His beautiful wife Charity comes from the Philippines where they own a home. Darryl's interests include hockey, volleyball, badminton and reading.
