ACTIVITIES

The following activities are available at the George Pringle Memorial Camp for the 2008 summer camping season.

CLIMBING WALL

Challenge yourself against our NEW Climbing Wall. This simulated rock cliff provides challenge and excitement for all ages. Safety and instruction professionally provided by Pinnacle Pursuits Inc.

HIGH ROPES

Crew campers and Private Rental groups can enjoy the challenge of negotiating high wires, wooden bridges and trapeze activities high above the forest floor on our High Ropes course. This activity is also supervised by Pinnacle Pursuits Inc.

LOW ROPES

Learn teamwork and balance by negotiating cables about 2 feet off the ground. In addition to the low ropes, there is a drop of faith, a rope swing and a spiderweb. Pinnacle Pursuits Inc. supervises this activity with safety and learning teamwork as the top priorities.

ARCHERY

Using quality wooden bows, campers are taught safe archery practices, shooting at targets on hay bales. The archery area faces a steep hill, helping to keep stray arrows close. Campers learn patience and coordination in this very fun activity.

CANOEING

Our canoeing sessions are led by our well trained waterfront staff. The majority of the canoes are fiberglass and during summer camps, the sessions are limited to an area close to camp. Our canoeing out trip to Memory Island is a 5 or 6 hour round trip outting that is supervised by at least 9 staff including two lifeguards and a nurse. Campers learn balance and paddling techniques.

SAILING

Our sailing program uses small dinghies to teach campers some basic sailing techniques including rudder steering and catching the wind with the sail. Sailing is always supervised by at least four staff, including two lifeguards for a group of maximum 15 campers.

PADDLEBOARDING

Using windsurfing boards without sails, groups of 2, 3 and sometimes 4 campers will paddle out into open water about 20 feet from the dock. They will then try to work as a team to balance on the board, standing up. Campers are always kept a safe distance from each-other and as with all water activities outside of our swimming area, all campers wear PFDs and are supervised by our well-trained waterfront staff as well as their group leaders.

SWIMMING

Our "crib" is an enclosed rectangular area inside our docks that buffers waves from passing boats and keeps the swimmers in a safe private swimming area. Supervised by three lifeguards and assisted by other camp staff, campers enjoy many activities during the swim periods including sand castles on the sandy beach, diving, water slide, volleyball, sitting in tubes, playing with pool noodles and balls, or swimming.

WINDSURFING

This activity is limited to older campers who can enjoy trying to balance on a board while pulling up a heavy sail and try to control their direction. The weather is critical to the enjoyment of this activity, but when conditions are right, it is one of the most enjoyable and challenging activities at camp.

FAITH EXPLORATION

A trained non-ordained chaplain works for the camp for the entire summer. One of the rotation activities during the summer sessions is called Faith Quest which is an activity and discussion period that works with the camper to explore and enhance their faith journey. Most of our campers come from no faith background and campers are encouraged to share their thoughts and spiritual grounding. We celebrate all faiths and encourage campers to strengthen their personal beliefs with an emphases on United Church doctrine. Faith exploration includes these daily Faith Quest sessions as well as Greet-the-day, sung graces before each meal and vespers at night. At all times, staff role model Christian values and behaviours. For more information on our faith program, please call the Victoria Office at 250-472-6877.

CRAFTS

Crafts at Camp Pringle vary significantly depending on the volunteer leading the crafts for the week. Crafts offer challenge, excitement and a feeling of accomplishment to the daily activities at camp. Campers also have some opportunity to use some supplies during non-programmed times to do some safe crafts of their own, like friendship bracelets.

DRAMA

Some weeks drama is offered as an activity and led by an experienced person in the art. Drama games and activities are often used to help campers overcome fears of performing in front of people and to tap the hidden resource of their personalities. Spilt Milk Comedy Troup has volunteered at camp on many occassions and we are thrilled to have their talent. Even when drama is not offered as an activity, skit nights and talent shows are part of the program and all campers will be encouraged to participate in these activities.

CAMPFIRE

In the camping industry, in addition to flame on logs, a campfire is the time of community gathering to sing songs and perform skits, listen to stories and reflect on the day. We have a great campfire circle where we gather and sing very interactive songs with easy to learn lyrics that are fun and appropriate for the campers. Real fires may not be permitted due to fire bans, but we still have our campfire time with a simulated campfire during these times.

WIDE GAMES

Next to swimming, wide games are one of the most popular activites at camp. The games vary in nature from Octopus to Capture-the-Flag with the main idea being that these are games that use up a good portion of the camp property and can be participated in by the entire group. With the intermediate campers, we also enjoy night games, which are similar games, but played at dusk using flashlights as part of the game. With about 14 leaders participating and organizing the wide games/night games, these activities are well supervised fun.

TUBING

A special activity offered during Watersports Adventure Camp only. This activity is professionally run by our friends at KickFlip Boardshop and involves two campers riding in an inflated tube behind a motor boat. One of our lifeguarding staff assists with this activity from the boat in case of emergency and the other two guards make sure all participants a wearing appropriate secure PFDs and are acting appropriately while waiting their turn on the dock.

ORIENTEERING

At camp, we offer instruction on the use of a compass and teach campers how to follow written directions and have a basic introduction to map reading. The course of controls are placed at different places around the camp and the campers use their new skills to locate these controls. There are also some skill testing questions on the course to add a dimension to the activity. With the easily defined camp boundaries, there is no risk of a camper getting lost during this activity as might be the case with orienteering at other venues.
